Dermaplaning

What is Dermaplaning?

Have you noticed that your skin seems to look dull, or makeup doesn’t seem to sit nicely on your skin? If so, it may be because you have a buildup of dead skin cells or vellus hair (peach fuzz) that can make your skin look uneven or texturized. Dermaplaning is an effective treatment option for achieving a smoother and brighter complexion. During this treatment, a special dermaplaning scalpel is used to gently exfoliate the skin, removing unwanted skin cells, dirt, and hair.

Dermaplaning can be performed to improve the following:

  • Dull skin.
  • Dry skin.
  • Acne scarring.
  • Sun-damaged skin.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles.

Who Can Benefit from Dermaplaning?

Healthy individuals who are looking for a quick and easy way to improve the look and feel of their skin can benefit from dermaplaning. While dermaplaning is safe for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is not recommended if you have active acne in the treatment site, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, or sunburn. Also, if you are taking the medication isotretinoin for severe acne, you should wait at least six months after you stop taking it to receive dermaplaning. Please schedule a consultation appointment at our office to see if this treatment is right for you.

The Dermaplaning Treatment

During your dermaplaning appointment, you will lie down on a treatment chair or bed, and your skin will be cleansed. Then, your provider will use a special dermaplaning blade to gently and precisely scrape your skin at a 45-degree angle, removing any dead skin cells and hair. Treatment is generally quick, taking 30 minutes to complete. Once treatment is finished, a soothing substance like aloe will be applied to your skin, as well as sunscreen.

Dermaplaning Results

There is no downtime needed after dermaplaning, which means that you can feel free to resume your regular daily activities right away. Your face may be temporarily red for a few hours after treatment, which will dissipate with time. Be sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen when outdoors and a moisturizer after treatment to protect your skin, as it may be sensitive. Dermaplaning treatments can be repeated every 3-4 weeks to maintain results.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure for your skin. This treatment removes the superficial layer of skin that is comprised of dry skin, dead skin cells, dirt, and peach fuzz hair, by carefully shaving it away with a surgical blade.

Are there any side effects or downtime?

Some blotchiness and stinging may persist for about a day after treatment, but all patients are able to resume their daily activities immediately following dermaplaning. Your skin heals after about 1-2 days.

Is dermaplaning safe?

Yes, this procedure is safe. Because this procedure involves the use of a very sharp surgical blade it should be performed by a skilled medical provider to ensure optimal safety.

Who is a good candidate for dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is great if you have dull or dry skin, acne scarring, scaley patches of skin, fine lines, wrinkles, or peach fuzz, as it can address all these concerns. It may not be right for you if you have an acne or cold sore breakout, eczema, psoriasis, or open wounds or burns on the face.

How long does a dermaplaning session take?

The length of the procedure depends on the size and location of the area being treated. Normally treatments take around 20-30 minutes.

Can I combine dermaplaning with other skincare treatments?

Yes! You can absolutely combine dermaplaning with other skincare treatments. In some cases, it is even encouraged. Popular treatments to pair with dermaplaning include chemical peels or traditional facials.

What are the benefits of dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning offers great benefits like hair removal, reducing the appearance of acne scars and other skin imperfections, and minimizing the appearance of dull skin. Because the top layer of skin is being removed a healthier, smoother, glowing, and more youthful layer is revealed.

How often should I get dermaplaning done?

The top layer of your skin regenerates after about 3-4 weeks. That is also how long it takes for the hair of your face to fully grow back. Dermaplaning sessions can be repeated at this rate as well.

Is dermaplaning painful?

Despite a surgical blade being used to perform this treatment, no incision is actually made. You may feel a slight scratching sensation on your face as your provider carefully moves the blade along your skin, but dermaplaning is not considered a painful treatment.

Is dermaplaning safe for all skin tones?

Dermaplaning is a suitable treatment for men and women of all skin tones.

Can I do dermaplaning at home?

It is not recommended that you perform dermaplaning on yourself at home. There is an increased chance that you may accidentally cut yourself with the blade leading to the possibility of infection. If not done properly, dermaplaning can potentially worsen skin concerns like acne or texture problems. It is always best to leave these kinds of treatments to the professionals.
